NIB and Nivos Energia improve energy and water infrastructure in Mäntsälä, Finland

NIB and the Finnish utility company Nivos Energia Oy have agreed a EUR 10 million loan to finance renewable energy and water-related investments in the municipality of Mäntsälä, north of Helsinki.

The 14-year loan programme will finance Nivos Energia’s investments in improving the renewable energy supply and maintaining a sustainable water infrastructure in Mäntsälä municipality.

The investment programme includes the construction of a biogas plant at Knehtilä, an organic cereal farm in the rural community of Palopuro. The farm is part of a network of local grain producers and processors. Biomass from green manuring leys from Knehtilä’s crop rotation will be combined with horse and chicken manure from neighbouring farms for processing into biogas, to be used for farm machinery and for sale for passenger cars.

This way, the new biogas facility will support the decarbonisation of energy generation and ensure nutrient self-sufficiency for the farming cooperative.

Further, the programme includes the recovery of waste heat produced by a local data centre in Mäntsälä for use in the local district heating system.

Other energy-related investments concern the construction of a new power connection between the residential areas of Hikiä and Kapuli, and the cabling and reinforcing of Nivos’ distributions network. In addition, charging stations for electrical vehicles will be installed in the municipality.

The water-related investments involve the expansion and upgrade of wastewater collection and treatment, as well as the expansion of drinking water infrastructure.

“The improvements to the renewable energy and water infrastructure will support the growing number of households and businesses in Mäntsälä, and encourage sustainable production and growth in the community”, says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.

The projects are being implemented during 2018–2022.
