NIB to discuss the future of sustainable financing at COP24

On Tuesday 11 December you are welcome to watch a live webcast of NIB’s panel debate from the Nordic Council of Ministers Nordic Pavilion at this year’s UN climate negotiations.

The 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is held 3 – 14 December. The COP24 is hosted by Poland in Katowice, and the aim is to make the Paris Agreement a reality. Meeting the targets of keeping global warming “well below 2 degrees Celsius” and making efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees would mean profound changes to the environment, health, business and infrastructure.

NIB will co-organise a Finance Day in the Nordic Pavilion together with Nordic Environment Finance Group (NEFCO) and Nordic Development Fund (NDF) on Tuesday 11 December.

NIB’s panel debate starts at 10:15 and is titled Sustainable financing: What can we expect for the future? We look forward to the debate together with our panellists:

• Hoesung Lee, Chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
• Marie Baumgarts, Head of Sustainability at SEB, Member of EU Commission Technical Expert Group on Sustainable Finance
• Anna Denell, Sustainability Director at Vasakronan
• Idar Kreutzer, CEO of Finance Norway
• Thomas Wrangdahl, First Vice-President and Head of Lending at NIB

The session is moderated by Jukka Ahonen, NIB’s Head of Communications.

Starting from the global perspective, we will hear from IPCC about their recent climate estimates, the biggest challenges and their views on the climate preparedness of financial institutions.

At the European level, we will have an update on the work of the EU Technical Working Group on Sustainable Finance in establishing EU definitions green financing and the pros and cons of such definitions.

How is the gap in financial financing perceived and related to at the level of Nordic countries? What kind of instruments are still needed?

There is a huge variety of different sustainability reporting frameworks, initiatives, targets and standards, some optional, others obligatory or in the process of becoming so. We also ask what are the most important aspects needed from the frameworks in order to drive the green transition, and which of these frameworks investors will choose going forward.
