NIB and the Swedish property developer Akademiska Hus AB have signed a 12-year loan agreement of SEK 1 billion (EUR 105 million) for the construction of four university facilities across Sweden.

The loan will finance the construction of a new building for the Royal Music College (Kungliga Musikhögskolan) in Stockholm, the Segerstedt building at Uppsala University, the renovation and expansion of the microbiological centre at Umeå University, and the modernisation of the Framtidens lab at the Karolinska Institute in Flemingsberg.

The construction of new premises for the Royal Music College in Stockholm provides state-of-the-art facilities for a world-class music institution with an interdisciplinary focus. The building was inaugurated in 2016.

The Segerstedt building will accommodate all the administrative and management functions of Uppsala University. Upon completion in summer 2017, the building will have a floor area of 22,300 m2 for up to 600 employees.

At Umeå University, the modernised and expanded microbiological centre will provide facilities for experimental and translational research in medical fields. The 2,300 m2 facility will be inaugurated in 2020.

The Framtidens lab at the Karolinska Institute is a cutting edge biomedical centre for research in several fields, including infectious diseases and odontology. Around 800 scientists will work at the modernised 10,000 m2 building. Inauguration will take place in 2018.

“The construction of state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities will strengthen scientific competence and the competitiveness of higher education in Sweden. The projects will provide the necessary infrastructure for increased cooperation between academia and industry”, says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.

All four facilities will be certified as “Silver” under the Swedish environmental certification system for green buildings (Miljöbyggnad).
