NIB and University Properties of Finland Ltd. have signed a 15-year loan agreement totalling EUR 50 million for the construction of new healthcare research and teaching facilities.

The loan will secure the building of multifunctional facilities with synergy effects for the Institute of Dentistry on the Kontinkangas campus of the University of Oulu and the faculty of Medicine on the Kupittaa campus of the University of Turku.

In Oulu, the new facilities will be used by the university, the oral healthcare providers of the city of Oulu and the dental hygienist training programme of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The project will centralise oral healthcare services and allow for better training opportunities. The building is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2016.

In Turku, the Medisiina D building will provide teaching, research and diagnostic facilities for the Hospital District of Southwest Finland, the University of Turku and the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). The building will house a number of healthcare providers and offer access to modern medical equipment. The construction work is to be completed by summer 2018.

“The new university premises will help establish modern clusters for research and treatment and allow for better cooperation between healthcare operators and academia. The project improves the effectiveness of the public health network in Finland, which makes it eligible for a loan from NIB”, says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.

Both facilities will be constructed in line with the BREEAM certification requirements for environmentally friendly buildings, which influence the choice of structures and materials to ensure sustainable construction and maintenance of the premises.

University Properties of Finland Ltd. develops attractive campus facilities and maintains and leases premises for the use of universities and businesses outside the greater Helsinki area in Finland. The company is owned by the Finnish state and the universities outside the Helsinki region.
