Project

The uncommitted credit facility has been provided for the City of Varberg’s investment programme for water, wastewater and waste projects between 2018 and 2022.

A large part of the investment program concerns urban development areas, where infrastructure for water and wastewater will be constructed. Investments in water supply include a water tower in Varberg, water supply pipelines and a drinking water plant in Kungsäter.

A new wastewater pipeline connecting the eastern parts of the municipality is being built, making it possible to close an outdated plant in Tvååker.

A new waste sorting and recycling station is intended to add capacity for sorting different waste fractions in order to meet the demands of the growing population. The aim is also to enable reuse of products by combining waste sorting with the possibility to donate discarded items to charity organisations.

Varberg is located in the county of Halland on the west coast of Sweden and has a population of about 65,000.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

Water supply:

Investments in water and waste management systems will secure the supply and sufficient capacity of the municipality’s infrastructure services. The investments in freshwater supply are not expected to have significant impacts on the environment.

Wastewater treatment:

Refurbishing and expanding the sewer network, as well as the upgrading measures at the Getterö wastewater treatment plant, will ensure that the quality of discharged wastewater will remain at acceptable levels.

Waste sorting and recycling station:

The new waste sorting and recycling station is essential for a sustainable society, although it is difficult to pinpoint the absolute environmental improvements in quantitative terms.

Sustainability summary

The quality of the discharged wastewater at Getterö wastewater treatment plant meets the HELCOM recommendations, as well as anticipated new environmental permit requirements.
