The investments in drinking water supply improvements include projects to upgrade the existing infrastructure and connect new customers to the networks.

The projects related to the waste and storm water management encompass upgrades at the Skebäcksverket wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) as well as seven smaller WWTPs.

Due to the investments, the municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure capacity will increase by up to 10,000 PE (person equivalent).

The projects are scheduled to be implemented during the period 2018–2022. Total investments amount to SEK 1,290 million.

Örebro is a municipality of around 150,000 inhabitants located in central Sweden. It is the seventh largest city in Sweden and one of the country’s largest inland hubs.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

Investments in water infrastructure assets will improve the quality of infrastructure services, securing the supply and sufficient service capacity over the coming years. Approximately 4,000 new buildings are expected be connected to the networks in relation with the projects.

Expected impacts related to the investment:

  • Number of new buildings to be connect to the networks: +4,000

Environment:

The investments will allow to increase the connectivity to the municipal wastewater infrastructure by a total of up to 10,000 PE (person equivalent).

The load of pollutants is expected to decrease, as households will be connected to their own sewage treatment systems. Moreover, the further development of the storm water infrastructure will reduce the risks of storm water being discharged to the sewage system, preventing it from overflowing during heavy rainfall.

Expected impacts related to the investment:

  • Increased municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure capacity: +10,000 PE

Sustainability summary
