Project

The loan has been provided to finance investments in a new recovery boiler at SCA’s liner mill Obbola just outside Umeå and the expansion of an integrated pulp mill at SCA’s paper mill Ortviken in Sundsvall. The new boiler will facilitate an increase in the pulp production from 220,000 to 300,000 tonnes per year. Furthermore, the new combined steam turbine is designed for an annual production of 140 GWh of electricity based on bio fuel. At the Ortviken paper mill, the company is expanding the production of mechanical pulp. The investment will allow increasing paper production with significant quality improvements. SCA is a global consumer goods and paper company. SCA produces personal care products, tissue, packaging solutions, publication papers and solid-wood products in more than 90 countries.

Sustainability summary

The project to replace the chemical recovery boiler at SCA’s mill in Umeå decreases the emissions of dust, greenhouse gases, odour and noise as well as reduces the need for fossil fuel and increases the generation of carbon-neutral electricity. The project to increase the production capacity of thermo-mechanical pulp at the mill in Sundsvall does not change the mill’s current environmental performance significantly. Both projects comply with the best available techniques in the EU. The pulp mill is chain-of-custody certified, meaning that the origin of the products can be traced. The additional wood supply is available from SCA’s existing wood sources. SCA’s mills have environmental management systems, certified in accordance with ISO 14001.
