Project

The loan is earmarked for financing the connection of new homes to the municipality’s freshwater supply network and central wastewater treatment plant. The costs of the freshwater project are estimated at SEK 110 million and those of the wastewater treatment project at SEK 140 million.

The investments include the construction of 100 kilometres of pipeline between Engeltofta and Harkskär in Gävle, which will connect 850 buildings (mostly summer cottages) to the municipal networks. The capacity of the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Duvbacken is sufficient to handle the increased wastewater flow, and the plant complies with the HELCOM recommendations.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

The extension of fresh water supply services will improve the level of comfort for the inhabitants of the area and enable several hundred other residential buildings to be connected to the system during the next 20 years.

The wastewater treatment project will enhance environmental benefits through the reduction of untreated wastewater discharges into the ecosystem. The centralisation of wastewater treatment is expected to increase efficiency.

Sustainability summary

No significant environmental impacts are expected during the implementation of the project. The wastewater treatment requirements for centralised wastewater treatment plants are generally stricter than for smaller on-site treatment systems.
