Project

The loan totalling SEK 700 million will be used for financing a soda recovery boiler, set in operation in 2006, at Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget SCA’s pulp mill in Sundsvall, Sweden. The new boiler facilitates an increase in pulp production to 420,000 tonnes. Combined with a new steam turbine, it will allow for annual biofuel-based power production of nearly 0.5 TWh, which will make the pulp mill self-sufficient in power supply. The boiler has many positive effects on several environmental parameters. SCA is a global consumer goods and paper company that develops, produces and markets personal care products, tissue, packaging solutions, publication papers and solid-wood products in more than 90 countries.

Sustainability summary

The new boiler will help significantly reduce emissions of SO2, dust and NOx. Furthermore, the mill is able to reduce the use of fuel oil and the demand for electricity from the public grid. The project will also result in a decreased emission of greenhouse gases. Emissions to air, discharges of wastewater, the generation of waste and noise as well as other environmental impacts are in compliance with European standards and NIB’s requirements. A 50% share of the project qualifies as an environmental investment.
