The loan has been provided for improving wastewater treatment in Ängelholm, Sweden. The loan has been provided in two tranches; a SEK 50 million loan agreement with a maturity of three years signed on 10 May 2016, and a SEK 50 million loan with a maturity of five years signed on 7 June 2016. The population of Ängelholm is growing at a rapid pace. The municipality is therefore upgrading its sewage system, replacing private sewer treatment systems, extending the sewage to new residential areas and upgrading its wastewater treatment plant. The investment programme runs from 2016 to 2020. Ängelholm plans to increase the capacity of its wastewater treatment plant to match a population of 62,000 from the current capacity of 37,000. Ängelholm has approximately 40,000 inhabitants.
The project will support the replacement of outdated and inefficient wastewater infrastructure to gradually accommodate higher wastewater loads from a growing region. The expansion of the wastewater treatment system is expected to increase capacity by almost 60%. A well-functioning sewage collection system forms a necessary component of a sustainable society.
The project will not have any significant environmental issues during the construction phase.
