The loan has been provided for the expansion of Pier C, at Copenhagen Airport. Inaugurated in October 2015, Pier C has been expanded by approximately 5,000 square metres and has received four new gates, including those fitted to accommodate double-deck aircraft. The expansion of Pier C is part of Copenhagen Airport's plans to increase its capacity in order to handle up to 40 million passengers annually.
Copenhagen Airport is the largest airport in the Nordic–Baltic region and the 15th largest in Europe, measured by passenger traffic (roughly 27 million passengers in 2015). Copenhagen Airports A/S is a listed company, with the Danish state holding 39.2% of the stock. The largest shareholder is Copenhagen Airports Denmark ApS, with 57.7%.
The extension of Pier C, designed to accommodate larger aircraft, will help reduce the turnaround time for aircrafts and create additional capacity for passengers. The project will allow the airport to benefit from the growth potential offered by long-haul flights. Customers will benefit from improved transport infrastructure, as well as reduced travel and waiting time. Creating jobs and promoting mobility and tourism, a modern transport hub will contribute to the economic competitiveness of the region.
During the construction, only minor instances of contaminated soil were found and properly dealt with.
