The loan has been provided for the upgrade of the fresh water distribution network and the wastewater network in Estonia’s capital Tallinn in 2013–2017. The investment programme is aimed at reducing the risk of emergencies and leakages and improving the supply of fresh water.
The scope of the wastewater network upgrade includes replacing pipes, increasing automation and control, repair works at the main sewage pumping station and renewing equipment at major pumping stations. The company will also implement improvements at the sludge treatment facilities.
The reconstruction of the fresh water distribution network includes replacing pipes and improving water supply to the water purification station.
AS Tallinna Vesi is the water utility of Tallinn. The company was privatised in 2001, and United Utilities (Tallinn) BV is its largest shareholder. The company owns the water and wastewater treatment plants as well as the supply and sewerage networks.
Competitiveness: The investment programme is expected to increase the value of the tangible infrastructure assets in the region and equipment upgrades are likely to improve the productivity of the company’s services.
Environment: It is expected that the reconstruction of the pumping stations will help reduce energy consumption.
The investment has low potential for a negative environmental impact.
