Project

The EUR 80 million loan has been provided for the upgrading of the company’s networks in the Moscow region and other regions of Russia.

MegaFon’s investment in the upgrade targets improvement of the network performance, energy efficiency and reduction of the operation costs. For those purposes, the Russian mobile telecom operator has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ Single RAN (radio access network) platform. The new technology will also allow MegaFon to prepare for the 4G service roll-out in Moscow and other regions of the country.

Established in 2002, MegaFon became the first operator covering all regions of Russia. MegaFon has over 63 million mobile and fixed-line subcribers. Swedish-Finnish TeliaSonera is one of the major shareholders in Megafon.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

The project contributes to the commercialisation of an innovative member-country technology. The project helps consolidate the presence of Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) in Russia, a competitive and high-growth market, while supporting the company’s transition toward higher value-added service provider. Indirectly, the transaction also benefits NSN’s multiple Nordic partners. In addition to that, MegaFon contributes substantially to TeliaSonera’s consolidated EBITDA.

Sustainability summary

MegaFon’s investments in telecom equipment are considered neutral from an environmental point of view. There are no significant environmental issues related to the purchase, installation and operation of the equipment.
