Project

The 10-year-maturity loan totalling EUR 20 million has been provided for financing the company’s investment programme for 2008-2010, including the maintenance and extension of the water supply and sewage networks.

The network extension will improve the access of Tallinn’s inhabitants to clean drinking water and modern wastewater disposal services. The loan will mainly be used to finance of approximately 110 kilometres of sewage pipes, 10 kilometres of water pipes, 35 kilometres of storm water pipes construction and 30 kilometres of water pipes reconstructions in different parts of the city. With sewage pipes investments approximately 3,500 households (approximately 9,500 people) that are currently using septic tanks will be connected to the Tallinna Vesi network.

Tallinna Vesi is the largest water utility company in Estonia, providing water supply services to 21,000 customers and 410,000 end-consumers in Tallinn and its surrounding areas.

Sustainability summary

Building new sewage pipes will decrease the risk of nutrients and other pollutants flowing into surrounding water sources. It will also facilitate proper treatment of the wastewater, as the sewage that previously flowed to small septic tanks will now be transported straight to a treatment plant. Continuous investments to water pipes constructions and reconstructions will help to further improve water quality and reduce leakages.
