The Nordic Investment Bank and University properties of Finland Ltd. have signed a EUR 75 million loan agreement to finance the construction of four new campus premises in the cities of Tampere and Jyväskylä, Finland.
The 15-year-maturity loan will help finance a new building for the University of Tampere to support research in the natural sciences and medicine. The new Kauppi Health Research Centre will offer modern offices, teaching and laboratory services for the School of Medicine at the University of Tampere, the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering at Tampere University of Technology and the Pirkanmaa Hospital District.
“Combining medical research with running a hospital improves learning and makes the local healthcare system more competitive,”says Henrik Normann, President & CEO of NIB.
The loan will also finance a new service and office building for the Tampere University of Technology at Kampus Areena, which will centralise its services for students and researchers.
The third new building will be constructed at the University of Jyväskylä, and house the departments of business and social science studies.
Both buildings will have space reserved for private businesses, with the intention of facilitating collaboration between academia and business.
The fourth building will put the Faculty of Education and the Finnish Institute for Educational Research (FIER) under the same roof at the University of Jyväskylä. This will increase operational efficiency and facilitate closer collaboration between the University and FIER.
“NIB’s long-term financing is well suited for the economic lifecycle of our investments and offers diversification to our loan portfolio,” says CEO Mauno Sievänen of University Properties of Finland.
University Properties of Finland Ltd constructs, maintains, develops and leases premises for the use of universities and polytechnics outside the greater Helsinki area in Finland. The company is owned by the universities outside the greater Helsinki area and the Finnish state.
