The new unit is expected to be ready and running in 2009, with a capacity of 1,600 megawatt. The two existing nuclear plants in Olkiluoto have a total capacity of about 1,700 megawatt. The new nuclear power plant unit will partly cover the additional electricity demand in Finland and will replace older power plants. This will help Finland to fulfil the commitments of the Kyoto protocol. In addition, the new unit will reduce the country’s dependence on electricity import and secure stable and predictable electricity costs for users of TVO’s production.
