NIB finances wastewater treatment plant Atlas in Gävle, Sweden

- NIB has signed a SEK 1,500 million 10-year credit facility with the Municipality of Gävle in Sweden.
- The financing supports the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Gävle.
- The project will increase treatment capacity and support stricter environmental standards.
The financing will support the Atlas wastewater treatment plant, a major infrastructure project being developed to replace the existing Duvbacken treatment plant, which has been in operation since 1967. The plant will be built by Gävle Vatten AB, which is responsible for public water supply and wastewater management within the Municipality of Gävle and is part of the Gästrike Vatten Group. The new facility is expected to start operating in 2031 and will be able to treat wastewater from up to 150,000 people.
The project is designed to accommodate future population growth and improve environmental performance. It will introduce modern treatment technology and increase hydraulic capacity, while creating room for future expansion.
Lena Blad, CEO of Gästrike Vatten said: “The approval of our application to NIB is an important step in financing the new wastewater treatment plant in Gävle. We’re now continuing our work to secure long-term, sustainable and competitive financing terms. This is an important investment for Gävle and for future generations.”
André Küüsvek, NIB President and CEO said: “Investments in wastewater infrastructure are essential for protecting water resources and supporting sustainable urban development. The Atlas project will strengthen environmental performance and provide the capacity for future growth.”The Municipality of Gävle is a local government authority in Sweden responsible for public services and infrastructure.
