NIB finances modernisation of Atria’s convenience food factory in Finland

- NIB has signed a EUR 41 million, 10-year loan agreement with Atria Plc.
- The loan will finance the modernisation and energy efficiency improvements of the company’s convenience food factory in Nurmo, Finland.
- The modernised facility is expected to be operational in 2028.
The project involves a full refurbishment and modernisation of the factory. The investment aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance product quality and support the development of new innovative products.
The investment will enable Atria to make substantial progress towards its climate targets. The upgraded facility is expected to reduce the company’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions and act as a pilot for developing a carbon-neutral factory concept, with solutions later rolled out to other sites.
Kai Gyllström, CEO, Atria Plc: ”This investment supports Atria’s strategy of investing in convenience food and driving the transition to even more sustainable food production. Our modernised convenience food factory allows us to develop and produce new and innovative types of convenience food. It also enables a completely new kind of carbon-neutral food production.”
André Küüsvek, NIB President and CEO: “This project supports the modernisation of Finland’s food industry, while delivering clear energy efficiency and climate benefits. By helping Atria to electrify key production processes and test a carbon-neutral factory concept, we are also contributing to the development of scalable solutions for more sustainable food production.”
The project is significant for Finland’s food manufacturing sector and especially important in regions where Atria is a major employer. It also supports the resilience and reliability of domestic food production systems.
Atria Plc is the second largest food industry company and the largest meat processor in Finland, employing approximately 3,800 people and operating in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Estonia.
