More Than Money – NIB’s history book published

1.9.2026 Press release

The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) marks 50 years of operations with the publication of More Than Money, a history of the Bank published by Finnish publishing company Otava.

When NIB opened its doors in 1976, it had only a handful of employees, offices rented from a Helsinki newspaper, and a deliberately loosely defined mission: to finance projects that served the “Nordic interest.”

Over the following decades, the Bank grew in both size and ambition. To better support the goals of its member countries, NIB developed innovative approaches to funding and to assessing the impact of the projects the Bank financed.

Tracking the history of NIB, historian Byron Z. Rom-Jensen explores the issues, people, decisions, and controversies that shaped the Bank as a unique institution in Nordic-Baltic financial cooperation.

“As I discovered more about NIB’s role and influence on its region, it became clear to me that this was an important piece of Nordic-Baltic history that had not yet been fully told,” Rom-Jensen says.
