Loan financing to Belchatow reaches EUR 150m

The loan financing is used for the construction of a new 833 MW power unit as well as the modernisation of existing units. This is necessary in order to improve Belchatow’s power production efficiency and reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitric oxides from the power plant. The total cost of the investment is EUR 1.6 billion.

Belchatow is the largest single electricity generator in Poland and generates 20% of the Polish electricity. It has a capacity of 4,500 MW. Poland is an important electricity exporter for the Baltic Sea region.

NIB has been financing the modernisation of the Polish energy production industry since late 1990s. With a loan totalling USD 150 million, the Bank was the main long-term financier of BOT Electrownia Turow, another power plant that belongs to the same state-owned power group in Poland.
