Project
NIB has provided a loan to Ringkjøbing Landbobank (RLB) for on-lending to environmental projects and small and medium-sized enterprises. A substantial part of the proposed loan is expected to be allocated to renewable energy projects.
RLB is a Danish regional and niche bank, established in 1886, with retail banking operations in central, westerns and northern Jutland, Denmark. NIB and RLB have been cooperating in financing of SMEs and environmental projects since 1999.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Productivity:
Research shows that SMEs typically face more difficulty accessing finance than larger firms, as they rely more on bank loans and have fewer funding options. Limited access to credit may also hinder their productivity, though this is debated. In theory, targeted loan programs could help boost SME productivity and reduce market inefficiencies.
Environment:
RLB has a strong track record in financing environmental projects. For this loan program, most on-lending will be targeting projects aligned with the EU taxonomy, mainly in renewables like wind, solar, and possibly biogas.
Sustainability summary
Projects that are financed through a financial intermediary are required to fulfil the requirements defined in NIB’s Sustainability Policy and Guidelines. The borrower will be responsible for ensuring that the sub-projects meet NIB’s mandate criteria and submitting monitoring reports annually to NIB.
