Project
The EUR 11 million loan, and an uncommitted loan facility of EUR 4.5 million to be agreed and utilised later, have been provided for the expansion and development of Raahen Satama’s Deep harbour. The EUR 11 million loan will finance the construction of Deep Quay 3 and an attached storage and assembly field in the Deep Harbour at the Port of Raahe.
This investment is part of a larger project called Bothnia Wind, which aims to establish an efficient transport chain for wind turbines and boost the port’s overall capacity for various types of cargo. The total project cost is approximately EUR 36 million.
Several offshore wind farm projects near Raahen Satama are currently in the permitting phase, with construction expected to commence within the next decade. In addition, current customers have expressed interest in using Deep Quay 3 for large vessels, and the facility will be equipped for shore-side electricity installation.
The planned investments include:
- Building a new 173-meter-long deep quay in the Deep Harbour, including necessary dredging.
- Creating an adjacent 6-hectare assembly field, complete with asphalting and modern lighting.
- These projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2026.
The construction of a planned confined deposit basin, subject to approvals, would be financed later by the uncommitted loan facility.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Productivity
The new Deep Quay 3 and the adjacent cargo field will enhance storage and handling capabilities, allowing the port to manage increased cargo volume and accommodate larger vessels. The investment is expected to attract new businesses and industries.
Expected impact: Freight turnover after the project million tonnes: 9.5
Environmental
The project will allow larger vessels with lower relative combustion emissions to call at the port.
Sustainability summary
The environmental impact assessment and water permit for the port extension were completed at the end of 2023. The extension of port operations falls within the scope of the port’s existing permits.
