Project

The loan has been provided to cofinance the next phase of growth at Koskisen’s new Järvelä sawmill, increasing output from about 400,000 m³ currently, toward 450,000 m³, and plywood from 65,000 m³ to 80,000 m³.

The investment programme includes new channel dryers that expand drying capacity by approximately 15% and enhance product quality and briquette production line in sawn timber production and core composer and scarf jointing lines to modernise panel production.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

Productivity

Koskisen targets strong growth, more than 50% in annual turnover by 2027, qualifying it as a fast-growing midcap. To reach this goal, the company is investing in a new saw line and log yard in Järvelä and has already acquired the business assets of Iisveden Metsä Oy. The plan focuses on capacity expansion, with a sawmill output increase from 400,000 m³ to 450,000 m³ and plywood from 65,000 m³ to 80,000 m³.

The new briquette line will reduce waste and add a revenue stream.

These investments will sustain existing jobs, create new operational roles as automation scales, improve job quality and safety, and boost economic activity across a supply chain that includes firms in less‑populated regions of Finland.

Expected productivity impact of the loan:

  • Annual sawmill production: 450,000 m3
  • Annual plywood production: 80,000 m3
  • Annual briquette production: 10,000 tonnes

Environment

The upgrades will improve efficiency and increase production capacity, with some associated environmental impacts.

Expected environmental impact from the loan:

  • Wood yield improvement in plywood production: +20%

Sustainability summary

Koskisen’s sawmill production facility is in the vicinity of the Koivumäki-Luutasuo Natura 2000 area. The company confirms compliance with all applicable environmental laws and requirements.
