The loan has been provided for the upgrading of a wastewater treatment plant in Viikinmäki servicing Finland’s capital region.
The investment programme involves the installation of a biological treatment line to decrease nutrient loads, a project for sludge treatment to reduce nitrogen content, electricity usage and CO2 emission, as well as investments related to energy efficiency, infrastructure and maintenance.
Founded in 2009, Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY), is a federation of municipalities providing environmental services in the Helsinki area. HSY brings together the waterworks of Helsinki,Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen as well as the waste management services in the region.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Wastewater treatment is an important part of the municipal federation’s environmental efforts. The wastewater is to be cleaned efficiently, conveyed to the sea and returned to the natural cycle. To protect all affected water systems and the Baltic Sea in particular, it is important to develop more efficient treatment processes.
The key environmental issues are related to the improvement of waste water treatment processes in the Helsinki region. These investments will reduce the nutrient load to the Baltic Sea and improve the energy efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant in Viikinmäki.
