Project

The loan is provided for financing the construction of the MAX IV synchrotron radiation research laboratory, as part of Lund University in Sweden. The facility houses particle accelerators producing high-intensity X-rays.

The building was completed in June 2015. Scientific operations will start in summer 2016. The laboratory building was certified in accordance with the BREEAM certification requirements for environmentally friendly buildings, and includes an accelerator complex and project offices. The state-of-the art technology applied in the building process will allow the two electron storage rings of the facility to be operated using less energy.

Fastighets AB ML 4 is a special-purpose venture established by the Swedish real estate companies Wilhborgs and Peab. ML 4 has entered into a 25-year rental agreement with Lund University.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

The new synchrotron radiation laboratory will provide access to X-rays of high transverse coherence and ultrasound duration for researchers in the fields of physics and natural sciences. The facility is expected to strengthen the international competitiveness of the Lund research cluster. The planned office building at the new MAX IV laboratory has received a design-stage certificate according to BREEAM-SE, as well as the Swedish Miljöbyggand label and recognition under the EU GreenBuilding programme.

Sustainability summary

The BREEAM certification system is an environmental evaluation method and rating system for buildings. The risk of potential negative impact on the surrounding area during the construction phase or after the inauguration of the MAX IV laboratory has been assessed as low.
