Project
The loan has been provided to Swedish electricity network company Ellevio AB to co-finance the modernisation and expansion of the Beckomberga substation in Stockholm’s regional electricity network. The project will strengthen the reliability and security of electricity supply, increase network capacity, and remove critical capacity constraints in one of Sweden’s fastest growing urban areas.
The project includes the reconstruction and expansion of the existing substation into a new compact gas-insulated substation, as well as the establishment of a new 1,000 MVA grid connection node (2 × 500 MVA) linked to Svenska kraftnät´s nearby substation.
Fulfilment of NIB’s mission
The substation, which currently supplies electricity to around 120,000 customers, has reached the end of its technical lifespan. The project will replace ageing infrastructure, increase capacity, and enhance operational flexibility.
By adding 550 MW of capacity, the project will significantly strengthen the grid’s ability to meet growing electricity demand. The site currently has a capacity of approximately 520 MW, with only limited headroom for new connections.
The additional capacity will support new housing and commercial developments, the electrification of transport and industry, a growing population expected to increase by around 80,000 residents by 2040, a new heating plant, and the connection of new data centres.
Impact indicators related to the loan:
