Project
The 30-year-maturity loan totalling EUR 50 million has been provided for the City of Helsinki’s purchase of new low-floor trams and metro cars. The new trams are needed for both the city’s increasing tram traffic and for replacing old trams that will be taken out of use in the coming years. The metro cars are needed for the expanded metro network in the westward direction from Helsinki to Espoo, Finland’s second largest city.
In Helsinki’s transportation and traffic planning, one of the top priorities is to promote a fluent level of service in public transport as well as in cycling and pedestrian networks, vehicular traffic and parking. Improved traffic safety is also a central objective.
Sustainability summary
Environmental issues concern the environmental performance of the new trams and metro cars and waste management. The energy needed for the new cars will be in the same range as for the existing ones. Cars that are taken out of operation will primarily be used for spare parts and/or recycled or disposed of. The project will lead to an indirect reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
