Project
The uncommitted loan facility has been provided for the City of Gothenburg’s investments in the Skandia Gateway harbour expansion and three new sports facilities.
The harbour project will reinforce and deepen approximately 700 metres of quay walls, deepen the fairway and upgrade related infrastructure to enable the Port of Gothenburg to accommodate fully loaded ultra-large container vessels.
The new sports facilities to be constructed are Slottsskogshallen, Backavallens Sporthall and Masthugget Sporthall.
The City of Gothenburg will invest approximately SEK 1.56 billion to the Skandia Gateway project. The three sports facilities have a total investment cost of SEK 477 million.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
The port investment supports more efficient and resilient transport and logistics by addressing a capacity bottleneck at the Port of Gothenburg, the country’s main container gateway. The project is expected to strengthen logistics efficiency, support supply-chain resilience and reduce reliance on feeder transport and long-distance road transport.
The investment programme in modern sports facilities is designed not only to enhance public health and social cohesion, but also to support more efficient use of urban infrastructure and increased accessibility. These facilities will provide spaces for organised sports, school activities and community use, supporting a wide range of users including children and young people, persons with disabilities and older residents.
Sustainability summary
An environmental impact assessment was carried out for the Skandia Gateway project as part of the permitting process, and the required environmental permits, including for dredging, have been granted.
For the sports facilities, projects are being built in already developed areas and risks concerning biodiversity and polluted soil are considered low. Masthugget sports hall will be certified according to Miljöbyggnad Silver.
