Project
The 8-year-maturity loan totalling EUR 60 million has been provided for financing the expansion of the metal company Boliden’s electronic scrap recycling plant in Rönnskär, Sweden. The larger part of the investment will go towards a new furnace at the plant’s copper smelter.
The investment will triple the facility’s electronic scrap recycling capacity from the current level of 45,000 tonnes per year to 120,000 tonnes. The metal content of electronic scrap is roughly 25% to 30%. The increased recycling capacity will enable Boliden to further utilise waste metals, mainly copper and zinc, in their operations. The expansion, implemented in 2010 and 2011, is expected to come on line at the beginning of 2012.
Boliden is the third largest copper metals supplier and the third largest zinc metals supplier in Europe. The investment will strengthen Boliden’s position as one of the world’s leading recyclers of electronic scrap.
Sustainability summary
The expansion of the electronic scrap smelting capacity will enable Boliden to even further utilise the metal content of the electronic scrap waste stream. The new Kaldo furnace will be built as a copy of the existing furnace. All techniques used are tested and have a proven track record of operation. Boliden’s Rönnskär plant has an Environmental Management System certified in accordance with ISO 14001.
