Project
The loan has been provided for Atrium Ljungberg’s project to refurbish and develop the entire Söderhallarna property located in Södermalm, Stockholm, with a total investment cost of around SEK 1.72 billion.
The renovation of Söderhallarna will improve its energy performance, reduce carbon intensity to below NIB’s 2030 climate target while also reusing materials to preserve cultural characteristics and minimise any climate impact.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
The refurbishment and redevelopment of Söderhallarna will improve the quality of the services the building provides to its tenants, consisting of retail and office space users.
Söderhallarna’s energy efficiency will also improve with the renovation through the renewal of the ventilation system for better heat recovery and the replacement of windows to improve U-values. This will reduce energy consumption by 50%.
Sustainability summary
The refurbishment ensures the building’s culturally protected characteristics are preserved by reusing materials and donating reusable items to causes like a hospital project in Ethiopia. A comprehensive life cycle assessment was conducted to minimise climate impact.
The renovation will allow the building to remain operational throughout, with completion expected by December 2026.
