Project summary

Statnett, the transmission system operator (TSO) in Norway, is upgrading the 300 kV transmission power line between Surna and Viklandet to 420 kV. The Surna-Viklandet line will replace the existing 300 kV line along the approximately 47-kilometer stretch south of Trondheim.

The new line will reuse parts of the route of the current 300 kV line. The construction of the Surna-Viklandet section began in the end of 2024. The construction work is scheduled to be completed in 2029.

The project has received the necessary concession from the Norwegian Energy Regulatory Authority (NVE) for the construction of new powerlines and the demolition of the existing ones. Statnett’s environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the project was finalized within the scope of the concession and has been accepted by NVE with the license for the project granted in 2015. According to the project EIA, the major impacts from the Surna-Viklandet line come from the transmission lines crossing certain areas which are important for bird life’s resting, grazing and breeding purposes. The project is categorized as having a high impact on birdlife in one of the areas. Measures taken by Statnett to mitigate the project impacts will be reviewed during NIB’s usual due diligence process.

Statnett is currently also in the process of finalizing agreement with the remaining landowners along the route.

NIB will conduct an additional environmental review of the project and its counterparty during the public consultation period.

NIB welcomes comments on the project in question.
