Project summary
The E6 Ranheim–Åsen and E6 Ulsberg–Melhus are major road projects modernising Norway’s
main north–south highway into a safer, four-lane motorway.
E6 Ranheim–Åsen involves a 23 km upgrade north of Trondheim to a four-lane road with a 110
km/h limit. It consists of several sub-sections and is under construction, with phased completion
expected between 2026 and 2028. The project was approved by the Norwegian Parliament in June
2018.
E6 Ulsberg–Melhus is a larger 64 km multi-phase project south of Trondheim aimed at reducing
travel times, lowering freight costs, and improving safety. It will mainly be a four-lane motorway
with a 110 km/h limit. The Kvål–Melhus section is already open, and the remaining parts are
planned for completion around 2030. The Parliament approved its financing and development in
2019.
The combined project strengthens the transport link between Oslo and Trondheim, supports
regional housing and labour markets, and improves safety and accessibility.
The project’s scope and potential environmental impact imply the Category A, according to NIB’s
Environmental, Social and Governance Guidelines for Lending.
NIB will conduct an environmental review of the project and its counterparty during the public consultation period,
including a site visit. NIB welcomes comments on the project in question.
