European Spallation Source: Bridging the innovation gap

Together with other research facilities in southern Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will form one of the largest science hubs in Europe, equal in size and relevance to CERN and ESO. Upon completion in 2023, ESS will offer new research opportunities in the fields of life sciences, energy, environmental technology and chemical products for up to 3,000 researchers in the Nordic–Baltic region and beyond.

“Our universities educate scientists who produce high-impact research but fail at relating academic work to industrial competitiveness. This silo thinking has to be addressed, and I hope ESS can be part of the change”, says ESS Director John Womersley.
