NIB has signed a 15-year loan agreement of SEK 205 million (EUR 21 million) with the Swedish drinking water provider Sydvatten AB to improve the supply network in the Skåne region, Sweden.

The loan will finance the construction of a 25-kilometre fresh water pipe, connecting the Äktaboden reservoir to Sydvatten’s Ringsjöverket water purification plant.

The pipeline will run alongside an already existing connection with the purpose of creating redundancy in the network to expand its overall capacity. The new pipe will support Sydvatten’s efforts to achieve a sustainable water supply and enable effective distribution to a growing number of consumers in the Skåne region.

Further, the project is intended to improve the operation of the Ringsjöverket, as it will reduce the need to constantly pump water into the plant by enabling gravity-fed water inflow. This is expected to reduce the energy use of the Ringsjö station, as well as its CO2 emissions.

The project is part of Sydvatten’s infrastructure investment programme, which is budgeted at SEK 420 million (EUR 43 million). The construction of the new pipeline will be carried out during the years 2016–2018.

Sydvatten AB is a municipally owned company producing drinking water for approximately 900,000 inhabitants in the region of Skåne, including the cities of Malmö and Lund. Sydvatten was founded in 1966 by 16 municipalities and is today one of Sweden’s largest providers of drinking water.

NIB is an international financial institution owned by eight member countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The Bank finances private and public projects in and outside the member countries.
