NIB and the city of Tampere in central Finland have signed a long-term loan agreement totalling EUR 50 million for the co-financing of municipal investment projects.

The 18-year loan is earmarked for three investment projects: the upgrade of a freshwater pumping station and the refurbishment of two schools. The combined costs of the projects are EUR 112 million.

The construction of a new pumping station at the Näsijärvi lake freshwater treatment plant, built in 1928, will improve water distribution in the Tampere area. The pumping station pipe will be used for sourcing raw water for the needs of Tampere’s district cooling. The construction is estimated to be completed by the end of 2017.

Tampere is planning to refurbish its International School, with a capacity for 770 students, by 2017. The upgrade will also improve the energy efficiency of the school building.

The city will also expand the Tesoma School Campus, which combines primary and secondary schools with a capacity for more than a thousand students with a day care centre. The existing facilities, built in 1972 and 1983, will be modernised and refurbished for the needs of better energy efficiency. Completion is expected in 2018.

“The availability of long-term financing is crucial for the success of projects with a long economic lifespan, such as the municipal infrastructure investments Tampere is making. This is why the eighteen-year loan agreement between NIB and the City of Tampere makes good sense from the economic point of view and contributes to the attractiveness of one of the fastest-growing cities in Finland”, says Tarja Kylänpää, Senior Director, Origination at NIB.
