NIB finances wastewater treatment in the Helsinki area

NIB has signed a EUR 15 million loan agreement with Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) to finance the development of wastewater treatment in the Helsinki metropolitan region.

The 8-year maturity loan is earmarked for a 2012-2016 investment programme, which is targeted at upgrading and improving the wastewater treatment processes in the Helsinki region, particularly at a wastewater treatment plant in Viikinmäki, as well as reducing the nutrient load to the Baltic Sea.

The Viikinmäki plant became operational in 1994 and is the largest treatment plant in Finland processing domestic and industrial wastewater for approximately 800,000 inhabitants.

“This project is beneficial both for the Helsinki metropolitan region and for the Baltic Sea water system,” says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.

Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority, founded in 2009, is a federation of municipalities providing environmental services in the Helsinki area. HSY brings together the waterworks of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen as well as the waste management services in the region.

NIB is an international financial institution owned by eight member countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The Bank finances private and public projects in and outside the member countries. NIB has the highest possible credit rating, AAA/Aaa, with the leading rating agencies Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s.
