The loan will partly finance the second phase of the construction of a new, unified university campus in Kalmar, Sweden.

This is the second loan agreement between NIB and Intea. In 2018, NIB financed the company’s investments in the first phase of the Linneus University campus modernisation, which included the construction of the new “Vita” building in the eastern part of the campus.

In the second phase, two other new buildings, “Stella” and “Culmen”, were constructed in the eastern part of campus. These buildings include a large auditorium, classrooms, libraries, the main university reception, and offices for the university’s administration. The new premises also offer meeting places such as cafés, shops and restaurants.

The new campus buildings are designed to be energy-efficient. The facility is to be certified in accordance with the Gold standard under the LEED green building rating system.

Linnaeus University is a Swedish state university with six faculties, and was established by the merger of Växjö University and Kalmar University in 2010. The University has more than 30,000 students and 2,000 employees.

Established in 2015, Intea Fastigheter AB (publ) is a Swedish real estate company and has a portfolio of 29 properties across Sweden. Tenants include government agencies, government institutions, and other public institutions. The company has its headquarters in Stockholm and local offices in Linköping, Halmstad, Östersund, Vänersborg and Kalmar.

Education is the most important way of raising labour productivity.

The new, unified campus premises of Linnaeus University will replace a number of older facilities, and will concentrate these into one campus structure, making it significantly more suited for learning as well as more integrated with the city centre. The new, more efficient campus structure will increase the quality and attractiveness of education and research. It will also offer students, researchers and industry more opportunities for collaboration across fields of science.

Environment:

The main contractor Skanska intends to certify the university campus in accordance with the Gold standard under the LEED green building rating system. The two buildings constructed in the second phase have an energy-efficient design. Green areas are planned in connection with the buildings’ storm water control.

No significant sustainability issues concerning the construction have been identified. An environmental impact assessment was performed in 2013. As a target set by Intea Fastigheter, all new buildings in the portfolio should have green buildings certification to address sustainability issues.

Former harbour operations in the area and fill material have resulted in soil contamination, and remedial actions have been carried out prior to the beginning of construction.

Linnaeus University has prepared a sustainability programme for the development of the new university building, including targets for the location, layout and design of the building.
