Nordic Investment Bank to issue NIB Environmental Bonds

NIB will issue NIB Environmental Bonds for investors who wish to support sustainable growth. For this purpose NIB has established a framework that allows for funds raised through specific bond issuances to be directed to its environmental lending.

“Addressing environmental challenges is a concern shared among a growing number of fixed-income investors worldwide. In order to respond to investors’ readiness to support environmentally sustainable projects, NIB has introduced the NIB Environmental Bond. The new framework is well in line with the Bank’s environmental mandate,” says Lars Eibeholm, Head of Treasury and CFO at NIB.

NIB has a long track record in financing environmental projects through lending operations. Each project to be financed by NIB undergoes an assessment of its potential environmental impact. A considerable part of the Bank’s total loan portfolio is classified as environmental loans.

Investors will get the possibility to support NIB’s environmental lending. Projects which will qualify under the NIB Environmental Bond framework will follow strict internal environmental sustainability criteria. Eligible projects are aimed at (but not limited to):

– reducing emissions to the air by promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy, public transport solutions, recycling

– reducing discharges to water by improving wastewater treatment and cutting down pollutant runoff from agriculture.

The net proceeds of the issue will be held in a separate portfolio pending disbursement to eligible projects.

The first NIB Environmental Bond will be launched in the near future. The bond is targeted at Japanese retail and institutional investors and it will be arranged by Daiwa Securities Capital Markets Co.
