NIB and the city of Gothenburg have signed a 20-year loan agreement totalling SEK 1 billion (EUR 103 million) for the construction of the new Hising Bridge over the Göta River in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The Hising Bridge will replace the ageing Göta älv Bridge, and link Gothenburg’s city centre to the urban development project “Älvstaden” on the opposite river bank. This will support the city in accommodating the anticipated increase in public transport.
The new bridge will be lower than the existing connections and will be accessible to both cyclists and pedestrians. A traffic-adaptive control system will be installed to ensure smooth traffic flow both on the bridge and on the river.
The structure and design of the new bridge will free up approximately 70,000 m2 of land, which will be used for housing, offices, retail and the renovation of the nearby central railway station.
“The new Hising Bridge will support the sustainable development of Gothenburg’s city centre. It will allow for a more efficient public transport network that caters to an increasing number of commuters. This qualifies the project for a loan from NIB”, says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.
Construction began in 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2021. The project is part of the West Sweden Package, an initiative of the Swedish state, the city of Gothenburg and the regions of Västra Götaland and Halland, intended to promote sustainable growth and to expand the public transport infrastructure in the region.
Gothenburg is Sweden’s second-largest city, with approximately 550,000 residents living in its larger metropolitan region. The city is an important transport hub, with about 30% of Swedish foreign trade passing through the Port of Gothenburg.
