The loan has been provided to finance the construction and expansion of four university premises in Sweden: Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal Music College) in Stockholm, the Segerstedt building at Uppsala University, a microbiological centre at Umeå University and the Framtidens lab at the Karolinska Institute on Campus Flemingsberg.

The construction of new premises for the Royal College of Music in Stockholm provides facilities for a world-class music institution with an interdisciplinary focus. The new building has an area of 21,000 m2 and was inaugurated in 2016.

The Segerstedt building will accommodate all the administrative and management functions of Uppsala University. The building will have a floor area of 22,300 m2 and accommodate about 600 employees. The inauguration will take place in summer 2017.

The Microbiological Centre at Umeå University will be renovated and expanded to provide new laboratory facilities for experimental and translational research in medical fields. The newly added lab spaces will add an area of around 2,300 m2 to the building, and will be inaugurated in 2020.

The Framtidens Lab at the Karolinska Institute is a state-of-the-art biomedical centre for research into infectious diseases and odontology. The facilities will be renovated and expanded. Approximately 800 scientists will work in the 10,000 m2 centre. Inauguration will take place in 2018.

Akademiska Hus AB (AH) is state-owned company in charge of developing and managing properties for academic education and research in Sweden. AH provides higher education facilities for about 60% of the Swedish state university sector.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate


The construction of state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities is expected to strengthen the competitiveness and quality of higher education and scientific competence in Sweden. The close location of the university facilities to local science parks and sector clusters is expected to support cooperation between academia and industry.


All four facilities will be certified as “Silver” under the Swedish environmental certification system for green buildings (Miljöbyggnad).
